AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRIRORY (A.C.T.)
|
Canberra | Master Plan | In April 1911 the Australian Government held an international competition to produce a design for Canberra, its new capital city. Griffin produced a design with impressive renderings of the plan produced by Mahony Griffin. They first heard about the competition in July, while on honeymoon, and worked feverishly to prepare the plans. On May 23, 1912, Griffin's design was selected as the winner from among 137 entries. This created significant press coverage at the time and brought him professional and public recognition.

Heidelberg | Glenard Drive, et. al. | Around 1918 Walter Burley Griffin was commissioned to design an exclusive housing estate on the Mount Eagle land. The estate included the very latest town planning ideas with community parklands behind housing allotments, and winding streets, rather than the usual linear pattern. Both the Glenard and Mount Eagle Estates are characterized by streets that follow the topography of the land and importantly provide communal green spaces which conserve the indigenous flora; a first in urban planning in Australia.

| Walter Burley Griffin’s Sydney practice remained active for 23 years between 1914 and 1937, designing many significant public and private architectural projects and contributing to the quality of domestic and civic architecture in that city. Griffin himself left Sydney for India in 1935. |

|
|
Griffin's 1932 plan of the Castlecrag and Haven Estates. |
Despite unsympathetic development, Castlecrag has retained much of its unique character. It remains a place of international interest for its vision and its achievement of town planning and building goals which are outside the ordinary. It reveals the Griffins as guiding figures who were quite passionately dedicated to the betterment of their fellows.
Castlecrag is unique not only for its planning but also for the substantial number of Griffin houses located in its streets. Fifteen houses were built to Griffin designs, ranging from the very modest GSDA No.1 Dwelling to the sophisticated Fishwick Residence. |

Griffith | Town Plan | Taking 'a modest estimate of 30,000 for the population', Griffin planned his city around a one and a half mile radius circle. Like Canberra, the urban design featured a distinctive radial pattern with wide tree-lined streets, ring-roads and parks. Griffin saw the focal point to be a grand circle, the centre of government administration, crowning the central hill.
