The Gable is the triangular end section of a pitched roof.
Throughout the different housing periods builders have chosen to decorate the gable with a wide range of styles and materials....
- from roughcast to simple timbering, popular in 1920's and 1930's,
- to elaborate carved woodwork from the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Edwardian Gable styles |
- Victorian buildings used a parapet to hide the roof.
- Federation housing was mostly single-story, so the gable became fashionable again.
- Some Victorian terraces had a small gable, a 'Gablet' in the roofline, and gablets continue in Federation style, usually for ventilation.
