The railway was opened from Sydney to Parramatta in 1855.
- The opening of the railway was a momentous event for Burwood as it made the suburb easily accessible to the city and brought a number of wealthy merchants and industrialists who built spacious country houses.
- One of the oldest surviving members of this class of gentlemen's residences is Henry Webb's 'Cicado' (1863), 74 Queen Street, Croydon.
- Anthony Horden's magnificent 'Shubra Hall' (1869) near Croydon Station, is typical of the elaborate homes built by wealthy merchants in Burwood during this period. Anthony Horden was one of the people who signed a petition in 1873 urging the Governor to establish a municipality. Leading the petition was Richard Wynne, another merchant who eventually became Burwood's first Mayor. Wynne's name is memorialised in Wynne Avenue.

Architecture

- Further south on Burwood Road is The Priory, built in 1877 by local councillor Mowbray Forrest, and Gayton, built in 1888 by NSW parliamentarian Richard Jones.
- The heritage listed St Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church in Railway Parade was formerly a Methodist church.

Appian Way, Burwood - see page Appian Way, Burwood
- Running between Burwood Road and Liverpool Road is The Appian Way, a model housing estate conceived by George Hoskins at the turn of the century.
- The street has been described as one of the finest streets of Federation houses in Australia and it is state heritage listed. In the centre of the Appian Way is a communal reserve which was converted into a lawn tennis club
- The area is a rare Federation Queen Anne (sometimes referred to as Edwardian Bungalow) precinct of architectural and constructional excellence. It represents an almost intact, complete Federation streetscape (though not strictly in Federation style) and is a unique part of the development of Sydney with exceptionally generous landscaped settings of high quality.
- The ideas that influenced Richards' design of Hoskins Estate Houses were those of the Federation Queen Anne Style popular from the early 1890's to the start of World War One.
- The essential character of the houses of the estate are related to intersecting gabled roofs, verandahs integrated with the house under the same roofline and turned timber verandah posts. Generally the houses are of complex, asymmetrical form, being dominated by extensive verandahs and prominent, irregular rooflines. The verandahs often have a corner emphasis and as the houses are placed on wide allotments, they tend to feature carefully designed and executed side elevations as well as street facades.
