St Peters is a very attractive suburb with beautiful large period homes, wide leafy streets (the Avenues), and neighbours who behave themselves.

The Municipality of St Peters was proclaimed on 2 August 1883.
Early settlement within St Peters began with the purchase of Section 256 by the South Australian Company. The sections adjacent to the parklands around Adelaide's city centre were intended for agricultural use.

With the city nearby, a river and two main roads as boundaries, water from two creeks and rich gullies along the western side, it was the South Australian Company's first choice when this 'country' land went on sale in 1838.
  • Within Section 256, which later became known as Hackney, there remain examplesSt_Peters_Building_Styles.png of early settler's cottages constructed by the South Australia Company. Because of Hackney's topography and this early history, it remains the most varied of St Peters' suburbs.
  • The suburb of College Park was laid out in 1874 and was described as the 'best possible Villa sites with the assurance of gas and water'. Plainly put, this subdivision was intended for a superior class of surburban villa suited 'for the residence of gentlemen engaged in business in Adelaide.'
  • The 1870s saw the beginning of the growth of suburbs around Adelaide and the consolidation of settlement within sections which had previously been used for agricultural purposes.
  • This was a period of intense land speculation and house building and there were few local government regulations relating to domestic residential construction prior to the 1881 Building Act.
  • The essential suburban character of the detached house on its own allotment emerged during this period and it was the provision of facilities such as deep drainage and reticulated water supply, as well as the development of horse tram routes from the City, which aided the growth of suburban areas, particularly those such as St Peters.
  • The architectural character of St Peters developed essentially during the 1880s with the building of characteristic villa-style domestic architecture. Elements of this style included verandahs with decorative cast iron, and a projecting bay window with distinctive ornamental rendering around windows and in the gable ends. These houses were the work of developer-builders and were constructed in groups of three, four or five of similar design. Larger houses and mansions were designed by architects and many of these graced the wide boulevards of Hackney Road and North Terrace.
  • In 1881, a large part of East Adelaide became the property of the East Adelaide Investment Company which acquired 199 parcels of land at 30 shillings a foot. Names of the streets reflected the developer's ambitions, for the majority are titled 'avenues' and not 'streets'. East Adelaide became synonymous with villa development. Indicative of these middle class aspirations was the formation of the St Peters Council. - The History of St Peters
